L.A. CAMP...What else are you doing in February?
We’ve all felt it. That weight from months of snow covered roads, blistering cold, and winds that cut through the thickest of Merino wools bearing down on us. No matter how much of a ‘hard man,’ or woman you are, Jack Frost eventually leaves us all with that dreaded mid-winter malaise. While we long for dry tarmac and warm breezes on our faces, the prospect of long days in the saddle with the sun warming our backs feels like an eternity away, fear not! The bite of Mother Nature’s wicked cold side is not without remedy!
Having a long history as one of the best locations in American cycling, Los Angeles boasts year round sunshine, miles of perfect tarmac, and climbs with comparable in profile to the legendary Les Deux Alpes which has made the city of angels a desired destination for Rouleur’s from all over the world.
This February, join The Wheelhouse on an epic, south of the border cycle camp where you’ll explore the most stunning rides Los Angeles has to offer. Each morning you’ll wake to the smell of a chef prepared breakfast along with fresh brewed coffee and croissants. While you select your favorite kit, (remember, it’s Los Angeles so bring out your colors!) our mechanics will have serviced and prepared your bikes for the days ride. Daily routes will be preloaded on your bike computers followed by an overview of what the days ride will entail.
First and foremost, this isn’t a race! We’re all here to make sure everyone of all skill levels have fun. But rest assured, if Los Angeles is known for one thing other than sunshine and celebrities, it’s the climbs. From the steep, short and pitchy to the long and steady 50k climbs of the San Gabriel mountains, these rides will test your limits and will power. But trust us when we say that every climb is worth it! As well, nothing like the promise of cold suds and a classic LA taco truck waiting at the end of the ride to drive your legs up and onward! Its then you will enjoy bragging rights via social media posts for all your friends stuck up in the deep freeze. While we can’t guarantee you’ll achieve the elusive KOM or top 10 segments, we can guarantee you WILL be a better and stronger rider and the smile on your face will be from ear to ear.
THE RIDES
When it comes to cycling, one thing LA isn’t short of is variety. From the beach view rides ofthe Pacific Coast Highway, the winding snake-like roads of the Santa Monica Mountains, to the monster climbs of the San Gabriel Mountains, you’ll have the opportunity to explore them all. Even within Hollywood itself are the famed closed roads of Griffith Park where within a mere15km ride you’ll still achieve 1500m of elevation gain! Starting in the Hollywood hills a great first day rolling on the famed Mulholland drive and up to stunning views behind the Hollywood sign (a sure-fire photo op for your social media humble brag posts!) then onward as we noodle through the twisting closed roads of Griffith park will be the perfect introduction to the rides the locals live for. Over the next 4 days, we’ll have mapped out some big rides such as legendary GMR (Glendora Mountain Road) which boasts winding switchbacks up to 360º views as you climb your way along the same route to Mt. Baldy Village ridden by the Tour of California. Another fan favourite will be the call to explore one of the locals favourites; the Angeles Crest Hwy (The 2) where you start riding among palm trees and rise to the pines toward Mt.Wilson Observatory sitting at 5717 feet above sea level. One of the greatest things of these long climbs is the decent, which is often a 20+ minute dessert.
Regardless of the routes, your LA Cycle Camp trip is sure to be a bucket list experience that will leave your legs happily spent and your memory bank full. And upon your week’s completion, you very well may have covered upwards of 500km's and 10,000m of elevation. Definitely nothing to sneeze at!

A Luxurious Tuscan Villa with an ultra modern estate with skyline city views will do the trick for a Wheelhouse Camp in L.A. It features a 5-bedroom, 10.5 baths, 3-storey, 14,500 sq. ft. masterpiece in the heart of the Hollywood Hills. It features endless amenities including a hair salon, massage room, bowling alley, billiard room, gymnasium, infinity edge pool, sauna, game room, an indoor theatre as well as multiple exquisite outdoor areas where you can dine al fresco & relax poolside. Traveling through the airport with a bike and paying for your bike to fly is not everyone’s idea of a fun way to start a vacation. Fortunately, we offer high-quality, bikes on all of our trips across Canada, United States, and Europe. Want to just show up and ride? Just bring your shoes, pedals, helmet, and saddle (if you want), and rent one of ours.

The Wheelhouse will service and pack your bike at least 3 days before your departure. A thorough inspection and wash is included in your camp package.
