Made-to-measure Italian road, gravel and titanium bikes, built in Calgary and shipped across Canada.
A custom Italian bike build is a bicycle made for one rider. The frame geometry, the tube selection, the component specification and the paint are all decided for you rather than for a size bracket on a chart. At The Wheelhouse we build custom Italian bikes from Sarto, Cicli Barco, Passoni, Colnago, Basso, Officine Mattio, De Rosa and Battaglin.
We are a boutique Italian bike shop in Calgary, Alberta. We are not a warehouse and we do not stock hundreds of frames. We build a small number of premium Italian bikes each year, and each one starts with the rider in front of us.
Every build starts with an ID Match bike fit. That gives us your real contact points - saddle height and setback, reach, drop, stance width - measured rather than estimated. We also use pressure mapping to check how you actually load the saddle, and we can design a UNIQUA 3D-printed saddle shaped to your own pressure pattern.
Only then do we talk about frames. Geometry that does not suit your position is the single most common reason an expensive bike disappoints, and no amount of component upgrades fixes it.
This is the short version. The full stage-by-stage walkthrough - what happens in each stage, how long each route takes and what we need from you - is in the custom bike build process.
Our Italian frames come in two forms.
Made to measure. Sarto, Cicli Barco and Passoni will build the frame to your dimensions. This is the real thing: a frame drawn for your body, not adjusted to it with a longer stem. Paint is to your specification.
Stock geometry, custom specification. Colnago, Basso, De Rosa, Officine Mattio and Battaglin make frames in defined sizes. If one of those fits you - and after a fit session we will know - we build it to your component list.
Groupset, wheels, cockpit, gearing, tyres, saddle. We will recommend, but the decision is yours. We will also tell you plainly when a more expensive part is not worth it for how you ride.
We assemble the bike, set it to your fit numbers, and you ride it before you take it home. If something needs changing, we change it.
45 to 120 days. Made-to-measure frames from Sarto, Cicli Barco and Passoni sit at the longer end because a person is building your frame. Stock frames assembled to your specification sit at the shorter end. We confirm your timeline in writing before you commit, and we tell you when a supplier date moves rather than letting you chase us.
Italy's small framebuilders cannot compete with mass production on price, and they do not try. They compete on three things: the frame is built by people who have been doing it for decades, the finish is done by hand, and a human being made a decision about your frame specifically.
Sarto builds in Italy. Passoni welds titanium in Italy. Colnago's C-series is still made in Italy. Cicli Barco and Officine Mattio are Italian workshops. That is what premium means here - not a price tag, but where the frame came from and who made it.
It depends on the frame and the component list. Italian framesets range from around $2,000 to over $12,000, and a complete build adds groupset, wheels and cockpit on top of that. Tell us your budget and we will tell you honestly what it buys, including when it buys less than you hoped.
Yes. A made-to-measure frame is only as good as the measurements it is built from, so we will not order one without fitting you first. The fit is also how we decide whether a made-to-measure frame is genuinely necessary or whether a stock size will serve you just as well for less money.
Sarto, Cicli Barco, Passoni, Colnago, Basso, Officine Mattio, De Rosa and Battaglin. Each has its own guide on this site covering where it is made and what it is good at.
Yes, though we strongly recommend a fit session here if you can travel. Where that is not possible we work from measurements taken elsewhere and talk the specification through remotely, and we accept that we are working with less information.
Yes. We ship across Canada and internationally from Calgary, Alberta. Complete bikes are packed fully assembled where possible.
Not automatically. A stock frame that fits you properly is a better bike than a custom frame built from bad measurements. What a custom Italian frame buys you is the ability to get geometry and finish that a mass-produced frame cannot offer - and a frame made for you by a workshop that has been doing it for decades.
